Hidden like a true underground event – Gettin’ to House of PainT

If you’ve been to House of PainT before you know that the location is a huge part of what makes this event dope, and if you haven’t you’re about to find out!

For anyone wondering how to get there here’s the DL:

Free Shuttle Bus

First off, remember that there is a FREE SHUTTLE BUS leaving from the NAC every hour on the hour starting at 3 (except for 6pm). This shuttle will also get people back downtown from HOP.

From the South:
BY CAR take Bronson and turn right on Brewer Way at the lights just after you go over the Rideau River. Follow the signs.

BY BUS take the #4 and get off at Brewer Way at the lights just after you go over the Rideau River. Follow the signs.

From the North:
BY CAR take Bronson and keeping going past Sunnyside. Turn left at Brewer Way and follow the signs.

BY BUS take the #4 or 7 and get off at Bronson and Sunnyside. Keep walking south along Bronson to the next lights (Brewer Way) and follow the signs.

If you come by car there is parking around the event at Brewer Park or Carleton University.

Remember to bring some cash money to buy food and drinks… and maybe some of the gear on sale by local artists (there are no bank machines on site).

• 2007 - May 4th – CBC Radio Interview - All in a Day – They’re talking about graffiti at City Hall. A plan to clean up the city’s walls has got both businesses and graffiti artists worried. One of the people who spoke at the meeting was Sabra Ripley. She organizes an annual graffiti festival called House of Paint. Legal Walls Safe for One More Year!

GRAFFITI MANAGEMENT STRATEGY RESULTS

May 3rd, 2007, 7pm: GRAFFITI MANAGEMENT STRATEGY RESULTS

This just in: Councillors voted today to uphold the proposed strategy… but they voted to exempt both House of PainT and Tech Wall, which means that even tho legal walls won’t be part of the city’s ‘graffiti management strategy’ these two will be allowed to continue. =)

Councillors Clive Doucet (House of PainT ward) and Diane Holmes (Tech Wall ward) proposed motions to exempt the walls (they’re long time supporters of them) – and the committee approved them. The exemption will be reviewed after one year with the hope that there will be a reduction of illegal tagging and graf in the area around the walls.

Though they’re definitely cracking down on illegal graf, and some seem to think all graf is bad graf, several Councillors were surprisingly supportive of the idea of legal walls. They recommended that city staff stay in closer contact with us so that artists can have a voice in the decision making process (there were no writers or youth on the committee as far as I could tell), and most were surprised and impressed by the quality of art they saw at House of PainT and Tech (we showed them the pictures on this blog).

It’s too bad that such a heavy handed report when through, but at the moment I’m just really happy we managed to save these two spaces. They’re important parts of our community and I would hate to loose them.

To those of you who came out: We done good yo! Keep up the good work!

Will keep up the activism for more free art spaces in Ottawa, but for now it’s back to planning the event…

The Graffiti Question

Ottawa is in the middle of a serious debate over graffiti. 

A new bylaw is being written up with some strict new measures, including a zero tolerance zone, fines for property owners who fail to remove graffiti, and immediate fines for anyone caught graffing or tagging.  As Ottawa’s only legal graffiti wall the House of PainT is caught in the middle of this and is under threat of extinction.  Check out these articles for more information:
